The colour is unusual in that it is so rich, which is the result of the combination of the brown oak, the fuming, and the aged patina. This makes the nut dish both doubly gorgeous and an exceptionally unusual and collectable item.
English Brown Oak is one of the rarest oaks of the world. Brown Oak is English White Oak that turns a deep brown color from a fungal attack that brings about chemical change to the tree. This valuable brown oak owes its russet disolouration to the work of the Beef Steak Fungus. Brown oak comes from a very few English oak trees in which the timber in the trunk of the tree is coloured by a naturally occuring fungus. This does not degrade the wood in any way except to turn the heartwood a rich deep brown colour which goes right through the bowl. "About Us - Vintage Mouseman Furniture|

About Us
We specialise in taking tired, neglected, and often watermarked, Mouseman ® items, and return them to pristine condition ready for another generation's use. Sympathetic cleaning and repolishing, whilst retaining the natural patina, will bring out the full golden beauty of the aged fumed english oak. Please contact us if you have items which are in need of some specialist cleaning and repolishing or have used items for sale.

Mouseman ® Furniture - a unique brand

Mouseman solid oak furniture is of such high quality that it will not only last for a generation, but with some TLC has a potential lifetime of use for many generations. Naturally seasoned english oak is one of the most durable materials out of which to make furniture. Each piece of mouseman furniture is entirely hand-made and is the sole responsibility of one Robert Thompson's craftsman from selection of timber (only naturally seasoned english oak is used) to the final coat of wax, including the individual mouse. The final colour is achieved by the fuming process and can vary from light to dark depending on the required colour.

Each item of Mouseman furniture is both an unique work of art, as well as a good financial investment. The actual assembly of a piece of furniture also follows a centuries old tradition in that all mortise and tenon joints are doweled for strength and stability using oak dowels, which each craftman makes himself as part of the production process. What other modern day furniture can you use for a lifetimes and then has a value often in excess of its purchase price? Older items often have a resale or auction value in excess of a new item purely due to its aged beauty.

Older chairs in particular can suffer from loose joints, especially on early items which originally used horse glue. Chairs which do not have material damage are easily refurbished to a look and feel better than new. The early leather used for the seat was not water resistant, and hence can suffer from staining. New leather is treated such that it is now water resistant.

Each trademark mouse carved is the personalised signature of the Thompson craftsman who made the whole item. As such a piece of furniture can be not only identified as a genuine Mouseman Thompson, but should be able to signify the individual craftsman that created it. Genuine Mouseman items must have the exact trademark design of mouse. Furniture with carved mice that are not of the trademark design (eg a mouse with no whiskers!) are not genuine mouseman items .

Ashley Coleman-Cooke, Hutton Rudby, North Yorkshire

©2008 Coleman-Cooke Mouseman and Robert Thompson's are registered trademarks, and are the property of Robert Thompson's Craftsmen Ltd , Kilburn, York, United Kingdom. "The Bowls and Boards of Robert Mouseman Thompson|

Robert Mouseman ® Thompson Bowls and Boards
All Mouseman bowls and boards are hand carved from English oak, which is several hundred years old and has been also naturally seasoned for many years. The items are then fumed to produce the warm nut brown colour. The famous mouse symbol, is found on every item crafted by Robert Thompson's ® . The story told by Robert Thompson himself is that one of his craftsmen remarked that they We all as poor as church mice, Whereupon Robert carved a mouse on the church screen he was working on. That particular mouse has never been found but it has continued as a trade mark of quality and dedication to craftsman ever since.
Very rarely English Brown Oak is used. English Brown Oak is one of the rarest oaks of the world. Brown Oak is an English White Oak that turns a deep brown color from a fungal attack that brings about chemical change to the tree. This brown results from a fungus attack in the growing tree, causing the heartwood to turn a rich, deep brown, but does not degrade the wood in any way. It is apparently impossible to tell whether or not a given tree will contain any of this natural brown oak until it is felled.

Mousey Thompson Bowls and Boards

Bowls come in many different sizes and colours, some picture examples are shown :
The early design of fruit bowl (per 1950's) was a deep bowl (diam:9in depth:3in ) with the mouse on the outside. This was superceeded by a design which was larger in diameter, shallower, and has the mouse centrally inside the bowl.
Diameter is usually around 11 - 12 inches, and depth can vary between 2-3in depending on the original cut of oak. Most bowls are adzed on the outside giving an irregular honeycomb effect which can reflect the light in a most pleasing way.
The modern nutbowl still has the mouse on the exterior of the bowl, but again diameter and depth can vary around the standard. The shallower version can be described as a nutdish, whereas the deeper version is a nutbowl.

Boards also had design variations over the years, but mostly with the oval shaped cheeseboard:
The early design of cheeseboard (per 1950's) was an oval board with a high handle and the mouse carved onto the board. This required the use of 3in thick oak. Later designs kept the mouse on the board, but had the thickness of oak used was reduced which resulted in a lower handle height. Modern boards have the mouse on the handle and economies have further reduced the height of the handle.
The large breadboard has remained largely unchanged in design, with the only way of dating these being from the mouse characteristics and the patina.
The small breadboard can vary in depth depending on whether it is used a backing plate to a clock or barometer. Be careful of marriages , where a modern 'slim' breadboard has been cut out to accept an old poor quality barometer or clock. These are frequently described as '1950's Mouseman barometer' on ebay.

©2008 Coleman-Cooke Mouseman and Robert Thompson's are registered trademarks, and are the property of Robert Thompson's Craftsmen Ltd , Kilburn, York, United Kingdom. "How do you tell if it is a genuine Mouseman item?|

Mouseman ® Small Items
Please contact us if you have any old or modern items to sell. We will always offer good prices.

Small items from the workshops of Robert Thompson's ® Craftsmen

The smallest item sold by Robert Thompson's is the napkin ring. Other small items include ashtray/pintray, chopping/cheese/bread boards, bookends, bowls, stools, booktrough, candlestick, lamp etc. Over the years many items have disappeared from this product range and hence rare odd items do appear from time to time. Designs have evolved over the years which provide some measure of the relative age of an item. An example of design changes are the length of the napkin rings. Modern examples are now longer at 2in. Consult the photo library to view a selection of items previously obtained and sold on this website.

Every Mouseman item is recognised by the very finely carved trademark mouse. Over the years the mouse has undergone change with more modern ones lacking the intricate detail of the early examples, but still with the trademark whiskers, and hind legs only.

The fruit bowl design has changed with the earlier 9in diameter version (with exterior mouse) being replaced by a shallower 12in diameter design with interior mouse.

How do you tell if it is a genuine Mouseman item? Firstly the trademarked mouse is very distintive and always has carved whiskers, and no front legs. Beware of imported chinese imitations, and carved mice (see left picture) that have been used on cheeseboards originating from a manufacturer in the Cotswolds.

Secondly be suspicious of any item where the oak looks too new or oiled, and does not have the deep golden colour which develops on fumed oak over the years. Thirdly look for the characteristic adzing and solid (single piece) oak design.

©2008 Coleman-Cooke Mouseman and Robert Thompson's are registered trademarks, and are the property of Robert Thompson's Craftsmen Ltd , Kilburn, York, United Kingdom. "History of Mouseman (mousey) Thompson Furniture|

The History of Robert Thompson - Mouseman ® of Kilburn
Robert 'Mouseman' Thompson of Kilburn, Yorkshire was a prolific maker of the 1930's producing traditional handcrafted english oak furniture. He used a mouse as his signature and trademark, hence the nickname. 'The Mouseman' has since become known as one of the best craftsmen of the 20th century and his family firm of Robert Thompson's Craftsmen Ltd still today manufactures the highest quality english oak furniture in Kilburn, using the same traditional techniques and skills. Examples of restored mouseman items are often available on their classic website .

The story of the master carver Robert Thompson

Robert Thompson was born in Kilburn in North Yorkshire on 7th May 1876, the son of John Thompson the village joiner, carpenter, and wheelwright.
After a period of engineering apprenticeship, which he felt was penal servitude, he returned to work alongside his father. Robert was influenced by the work of William Bromflet, a medieval woodcarver whose original plans and drawings of bench ends were later acquired and used by Robert himself.
In November 1895 John Thompson died, aged 62, leaving Robert responsible for the business of a jobbing carpenter. In 1905 Robert married and in 1906 had a daughter. During the next twenty years Robert developed his skills as a carpenter and stonemason.
In 1919 Robert accepted his first commission from Father Paul Neville of Ambleforth. More commsiions followed and by 1925 Robert had 6 men working for him. In 1928 he received his first commission from the USA for a dining table and four chairs and had expanded his workforce to 10 craftsmen. By 1934 the craftsmen had increased to 30 and the workshop enlarged.
Robert Thompson's trademark mouse first appeared around 1920, and was subsequently modified in 1930 to remove the front legs which were prone to breaking off. The mouse is an important identifier in assessing the age of a piece of furniture, as well as the degree of adzing, colour, and patina. Robert Thompson's did not necesarily put a mouse on every item they produced.
Each piece of furniture is entirely hand-made and is the sole responsibility of one craftsman from selection of timber (only naturally seasoned english oak is used) to the final coat of wax, including the individual mouse. The final colour is achieved by the fuming process and can vary from light to dark depending on the required colour.
Fuming wood is a technique used during the Arts & Crats movement in the early 1900's. Gustav Stickley, a maker of mission furniture, preferred fuming because it accentuates the medulary ray fleck pattern that quarter-sawn whit oak is known for.
The fuming process causes the ammonia fumes to react with the tannic acid in the seasoned oak and produce the characteristic colour. Initially the colour is grey like, but over time (many years) this develops to a rich golden brown. Exposure to sunlight will cause the rich colour to fade. Regular waxing is always needed to keep the wood nourished.
The seasoning, sawing, and adzing techniques make the medulary rays in the oak an attractive feature. With quartersawn oak, the attractive glassy ray-fleck cells are coloured by the fuming process, yet retain a muted contrast with the rest of the wood. Fuming tends to colour everything uniformly, leaving the wood more natural looking, whereas the use of stain on open porous wood like oak allows the pores to collect stain making them dark in contrast to the surrounding wood.
The actual assembly of a piece of furniture also follows a centuries old tradition in that all mortise and tenon joints are doweled for strength and stability using oak dowels, which each craftman makes himself as part of the production process. Older chairs often suffer from loose joints where the original glue has failed. Removal of the old dowels, in order to reglue the joints, can be very timeconsuming and hence expensive to effect repairs.
For upholstery the highest quality water resistant leather is now used, as older chairs using the traditional leather easily suffered staining from moisture.
Final finishing is normally a coat of wax, unless the surface is to be protected from moisture (eg table tops) when polyurethane varnish is used.
References:

Robert Thompson - The Mouseman of Kilburn by James Thompson
The Mouseman of Kilburn - Ivor Hughes
The tale of the mouse - Patricia Lennon ( click here to order from Amazon)
Robert Thompson's Craftsmen Ltd, Kilburn - History
Mouseman of Kilburn Video

©2008 Coleman-Cooke Mouseman and Robert Thompson's are registered trademarks, and are the property of Robert Thompson's Craftsmen Ltd , Kilburn, York, United Kingdom.
